2017 Cuilleron & MacLaren Syrah
A fresh floral and fruit bouquet leads to sweet violet, black currant and blackberry with a hint of fresh basil. The palate brings an intriguing prosciutto note with black currant and anise, and finishes with a fresh, light mouthfeel and mouthwatering acidity.
The Vivio vineyard is situated in a cooler part of the Bennett Valley appellation. The vineyard is planted to 3 clones of Syrah, 174, 470 and 877, which accentuates complexity in the wine. The Viognier is from the Timbervine Ranch vineyard in Russian River.
The barrels of Syrah were selected from the Vivio vineyard and blended with a small percentage of Viognier from the Timbervine Ranch vineyard. The resulting wine was aged in neutral oak for a further 12 months before bottling.
This wine is in hommage to the beautiful wines from the Cote Rotie region in the northern Rhone in France. I tasted through my Syrah barrels with Yves and we selected two barrels from the Vivio vineyard in Bennett valley to blend with Viognier from Timbervine Ranch in Russian River. The flavor profile of this wine is intriguing and wildly different from the 2017 Bonnie Glen, which is essentially the same wine without the Viognier. The wine shows the classic Cote Rotie notes with the fruit and floral lift and offers a fun comparison.
