2017 Bonnie Glen Syrah
A fruit-driven bouquet of black and red currants blend with fresh violets and sweet button mushrooms. The palate has an intriguing meaty note reminiscent of a ham hock leg, and hints of clove spice and boxwood round out the palate.
Bonnie Glen is our name for the Vivio Vineyard in Bennett Valley. Meaning "beautiful valley" in Scots, you really get a sense of place standing in this vineyard perched high above the valley, commanding gorgeous views in any direction. We first sourced this fruit in 2012, and the 2017 vintage is a revisit to one of our favorite spots. Planted to 3 different French clones of Syrah - 174, 470 and 877 - this southeasterly facing vineyard is sloped on volcanic soil. The 2012 Bonnie Glen was always a favorite wine and the 2017 shows the same sense of place. A little lighter bodied in this vintage, but again packed with flavor managing to balance the fruit profile with the earthy and meaty elements. We think this wine is going to become another favorite.
All three clones were harvested on October 6 and fermented separately at the winery. The juice was on skins for a total of 14 days, after which the must was pressed to tank where malolactic fermentation began. The tank was then racked to 100% neutral French oak barrels and aged for 16 months before bottling unfiltered and unfined in February 2019.
Food Pairing Notes
Wild game, venison sausage, beef stew or stroganoff, grilled vegetables and intense cheeses like blue cheese (perhaps on top of a juicy hamburger!).
