Russian River Valley

2016 Samantha's Vineyard Syrah
Pretty violets and hints of anise and pine sap lift the nose and add complexity to a flavor profile of rich dark fruits, olive tapenade, and pepper spice. The wine is precise with its balance of acid and tannin, and envelops the palate with a smooth finish.
This vineyard sits on the northeast side of Russian River Valley bordering the Chalk Hill AVA. The steep terraced-style vineyard is planted to the Alban clone on Spreckels loam with only 60 inches of soil on top of bedrock.
The vineyard was harvested in late August and fruit was fermented in small half-ton batches to maximize the skin-to-juice ratio, accentuating the characteristics of the vineyard. The juice was on the skins for 12 days during fermentation prior to being pressed off to tank to begin malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked to 100% French oak barrels before aging for 14 months and bottling unfiltered and unfined.
Food Pairing Notes
Lasagna and tomato-based pasta dishes, Chicken Cacciatore and grilled pork chops with a Bing cherry demi-glace.
The wine will age very well and will reward those who drink it between 2019 and 2030.

The Food Pairing Notes mentioned tomato-based pasta dishes and grilled pork chops, so I thought pepperoni and fennel sausage pizza from a very authentic Italian restaurant in Novato would be a good paring. It was excellent.
